There are a number of misconceptions and myths about the culture, traditions or customs of Spain, and some visitors only have the basic idea of the history of bullfighting, how to go out to eat tapas or how and where to spot a paella (Orozco 387). The fact is that Spain is a vibrant place, with a number of annual events and festivals and several cultural experiences; there is a lot to discover and explore here, making one’s stay ideal and unforgettable. Flamenco is perhaps the best and most popular Spanish tradition, which is often misunderstood with some European and American dance forms.
Flamenco is actually a particular form of art that combines dance (baile), guitar (guitarra) and song (cante). It was originated by gypsies in the 18th century, in Andalusia (which is Spain’s southern region). It consists of different local and international dance and musical styles, which have been influenced by Jews, European, Moors, and Christians. All over Spain, Flamenco is loved for its great dancing and guitar-playing styles. Even the word “flamenco” itself reflects a passion that is found in all people, irrespective of their age, gender, religion, class, and background. Therefore, we can say that Flamenco means being passionate about dancing, playing the guitar or singing a song. It also means pertaining to the flame, and the passion is evident from the way people play guitar, dance on the floor and sing their favorite songs.
