The reading for this assignment is: “It’s Not Enough to Say “Black is Beautiful”: Abstraction at the Whitney 1969-1974,” written by Kellie Jones. The main themes of the reading include (1) the rise of a range of art forms, including process art, pop, post-painterly, minimalism, conceptualism, abstraction, and protest. (2) Artists of African descent and the Whitney Museum, whereby the Museum’s commitment to African artists was made manifest. (3) Changing debates on ‘black art’ where artists of African descent protested for access to exhibition opportunities and a call for alternative artistic frameworks came from within black cultures. (4) Modern black artists in America who expressed the uniqueness of art in the twentieth century.
