The text is a summary of an investigation on alternative work arrangements in the United States that occurred in the economy between 2005 and 2015. Upon reading the book, I noted that the occurrence of alternative work arrangement (AWA) is a common phenomenon and is generally known as a temporary basis that affects numerous industries, including contract workers. From the text, the AWA strategy has been on the rise in the 21st century, and this is primarily due to an increase in the cost of operations that challenge the hiring of permanent employees (Katz and Krueger, 383).
Moreover, the occurrence of AWA has been propagated by technological advancement, and this is through the development of online intermediaries such as Uber. The article is a compilation of case studies that were undertaken in the U.S economy, and it compared the situation among various companies. Notably, the text provides insights on the number of hours that AWA is assigned daily and compared this to those on permanent work to gauge the disparities.
One crucial issue highlighted in the text is the distinction of independent contractors from those employed temporarily, who generally serve consumers at their own time, and they have no restriction on payment. On the other hand, those temporarily are under an organization’s watch bit they report to work upon request, and this shows that AWA is not necessarily independent; instead, they provide their services on limited time.
