Analysis of Race Perception in relation with Social Class
Races were formed from multiple instances of social relationships at different locations, which often worked together to achieve a specific goal (Garner 1); however, society, also, adapted a concept of social inequality that triggered a concept of human classification, called "social classes.” Social classes are a form of human segregation into a hierarchical set of social categories depending on their socio-economic status (Andersen 70). The most commonly known classes are: high, middle and lower class (Garner 121). A high socio-economic status usually connotes a certain level of superiority to those with lower socio-economic status that usually relate the lower classes as the “dangerous classes” in the social hierarchy, due to their difficult conditions (Garner 122). These social classes lead to the rise of different stigmas, stereotypes and racist ideologies that caused discrimination against other races around the world (Andersen 70). Although it is well known that racism and discrimination are the results of the belief in race superiority, the perception of a race hierarchical location in a social class should be further studied since the belief about the race’s location in the social class shapes the perception of its racial identity.
