Project 2: Rhetorical Analysis Assignment Overview: Analyze a Grammarly ad rhetorically and make a claim about its effectiveness. Describe the rhetorical situation of the ad, including hidden messages and analyze how the ad appeals to its audience through ethos, pathos, and/or logos. Rhetorical Situation: Steps: 1. Find your group. You will be working as a group (2-4 people) to analyze your ad. You will collaboratively complete Steps 2-4. Each person will then write their own paper individually. 2. This will provide a general context for the analysis in Step 4. ● What is the context? ● Who is the author? ● What is the author’s purpose? Identify the rhetorical appeals used in the ad. ● How does Grammarly establish ethos? ● How does the ad appeal to the audience’s emotion (pathos)? ● How does the ad appeal to the audience’s logic (logos)? 5. Introduction
Grammarly advert Closing the Distance is one of the adverts that have effectively utilized the rhetoric strategy to persuade its audience to download the software. Grammarly, Inc., a software company, is the author of the advert. The audiences are YouTube viewers whose jobs entails use of the software. The purpose of the advert is to persuade the audience to download the Grammarly software in gadgets and use the software when composing various texts. This paper shall, therefore, analyze the rhetorical strategies used in Grammarly’s Closing the Distance advert and determine the effectiveness of the strategy. 
Ethical Appeal of the Ad
One of the rhetorical strategies that authors use to catch attention of their audiences perception is by providing some sort of ethical appeal in their talks or even texts. Ethical appealing here refers to convincing the audience through affirming ones credibility. This can be attained by proving to the audience that the author’s ideas are more truthful and reliable. Proving an organizational or individual credibility to the audience goes a long way to earning their trust and with their trust earned, the audience is more likely to subscribe to the notion or the idea that the author is passing across (Higgins, Colin & Walker, 2012, p. 195). This explanation just shows how ethical appeal is a significant element that authors use to sway their audience to see things in a certain way.
The ad Closing the Distance, that tries to persuade the audience to use Grammarly software when preparing texts seems to have several examples where its author is appealing to the audience by showcasing the credibility of the software. A perfect example from the ad, is when the author shows how bosses in workplaces always seem happy when they receive emails that are grammatically correct. This can be seen in the ad when Anita is more impressed with her junior employee’s idea that she received I her email and even takes less time to respond since it was grammatically correct (Grammarly, 2019). This way, the add seems to be creating a perception to its audience that with Grammarly software they are likely to write professional emails that will impress their bosses. In other words, the author of the ad has used the boss figure to communicate the credibility of Grammarly software.
Emotional Appeal in the Ad
The other strategy that has over time proven to have been effective in persuading audiences’ perception is an emotional appealing strategy. Emotional appeal unlike other persuasion strategies focuses on changing the audience perception through playing with their emotions (Higgins, Colin & Walker, 2012, p. 200). This strategy uses emotions to win arguments rather than logical or factual presentations. This way the audience is carried away easily without questioning the facts about what is being said and believing on the author’s notions.
