The term ‘’overrated’’ is often used to diminish concepts, place, roles, and other concepts that the speaker believes do not deserve the prestige they commonly enjoy. By definition, overrated refers to something, someone, or an idea that is highly valued. If something or someone is overrated, that thing or person is considered more important than they are. In today’s world, many things are overrated, but the truth is that they are not better than others. Instead, they raise an unnecessary standard to make people believe that they are more valuable. When something is overrated, people have high expectations of it. However, they end up disappointed when they find out that that thing or person is only average. Arguably, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, is one of the most overrated places in the world. The truth is that there are more beautiful towers like Burj Khalifa in Dubai that are attractive.
The Eiffel Tower, also known as the ‘‘Timeless Monument’’ is always a dream destination for many travel fanatics, but visiting the structure is not exciting as people usually think (Barthes, 112). People feel excited climbing the top of the tower to have an expansive view of Paris, but the view from the tower's bottom is more interesting than the top (Callender, 1). One would expect the surrounding of the building to be clean and tidy. However, the surrounding ground is a dump with litter everywhere. At the doorway to the bottom of the structure, there are numerous street sellers, pickpockets, and beggers (Callender, 2). The building is just a brown lump of metal, nothing special.
Despite the catchy appearance of the Eiffel tower, it is always crowded. Patience is a virtue when it comes to the Eiffel Tower because visitors must spend most of their time waiting in queues. Waiting time ranges from one to three hours (Castellaro, 628). You have to wait in line to buy tour tickets, then for a security check, then for an elevator. Due to overcrowding, there is no personal space at Eiffel Tower, which means free movement is impossible. Throughout the visit, one will be constantly surrounded by people and screaming children, which makes the place more irksome.
