Interplay Between Fear and Foresight When Making Life-Altering Choices
In Macbeth, Shakespeare uses the interplay of fear and foresight when people are making life-altering choices. Notably, one of the most outstanding things is that foresight originates from the supernatural characters. This is demonstrated when Macbeth receives prophecies, particularly from the witches. These prediction cause fear in him, and lead to actions that alter his life. Therefore, Shakespeare applies interplay to influence how people make life-altering choices. Fear and foresight are important aspects that influence how people make decisions. In normal life, people base their choices based on the foresight and perceived fears or risks from these decisions. Through foresight, an individual is able to see how the future would unfold, particularly regarding the negative outcomes in their lives. In this regard, foresight has a cynical influence on fear. This is because the foresights assist in developing or enhancing the fear levels in an individual, corrupting the normal nature of an individual. In this regard, the person makes irrational decisions about their lives. In Macbeth, life-altering choices are made when foresight is used to instill fear, make irrational decisions, and leading to death. These are circumstances that change the life of characters within the play.
In the beginning of the play, we see Macbeth as strategist, energetic person, and assertive individual. However, as the story develops, we can see that he becomes immoral. This makes greed overtake his reasoning abilities. The character of Macbeth and his wife are used to demonstrate how these two aspects are related and play out throughout the text. The dark forces or supernatural are used successfully to demonstrate how the two aspects are related. When they are returning from the battle, Macbeth and one of senior soldiers are confronted by the three witches (Shakespeare). The foresight shows that Macbeth would become King in the future. While the event did not have an influence on the soldier, it became the primary motivation for future actions. The decisions that Macbeth made throughout the play were based on what the witches had stated. All that Macbeth pursues throughout the text is based on what the witches have demonstrated to her.
Another idea demonstrated by Shakespeare in the interplay between fear and foresight is how Macbeth’s decision were based on fear. Macbeth was always afraid that the foresights about him would turn out to be true. Therefore, he was doing his best to make sure that he prevented them from taking place. After killing the King of Scotland, Macbeth accused blamed his son. While he got away with the excuse and became the King, the prophecies from the three witches arose in his memory (Shakespeare). Although the prophecies were false, Macbeth did his best to make sure that they became true. All the decisions were based on falsehood. They were irrational and altered his life in many ways. There was no consideration about the morality or rationality of the decisions. He was purely motivated by the idea that the foresight could be true and pursued them.
