Othello being fooled by false claims
Iago deceived Othello that his wife Desdemona was having an affair with Cassio, as he sought revenge against Othello. Iago planted a handkerchief that Othello gave to his wife and made arrangements where Othello could overhear her conversations and convince him that she was unfaithful to him. This convinced Othello that his wife was unfaithful, and he subsequently smothered her based on Iago’s lies. Othello’s jealousy is heighted by lies as he then arranged for Cassio to be killed, yet Iago resented Othello for having failed to promote him as lieutenant. Iago collaborated with Roderigo plotting to kill Cassio as he would become more powerful, but he failed to kill his target and was wounded by Cassio. Othello was too trusting, insecure and quick to react that he was easily fooled by false claims.
Othello was too trusting and jealous that when he was presented with false evidence he did not do his own investigation on his wife’s alleged infidelity. According to Parvini (40), Iago was the most manipulative character in the play and he realized that Othello could easily be influenced having already observed his traits. Iago knew that Othello the Moor thought that every person who appeared honest was automatically honest (Shakespeare Act 1 Scene 3). Iago went out our planning his evil plan to create animosity between Othello and Desdemona. It is no surprisethat Othello’s character changes when he is fed with more lies by Iago as he gets upset of his wife’s ‘betrayal’, and he was now on a revenge mission.
