Life is a mystery. Sometimes bad things happen to people and they are left wondering why such events took place. It is, however, not a common occurrence that someone wonders why good things happen in his/her life. There are two schools of thought that explain why things happen. The first one teaches that everything that happens to man is due to fate, meaning that whatever happens in people’s lives is beyond their control. The other school of thought focuses on free will or choice as the root of everything. Here an individual will bear the sole responsibility of what happens in his/her life. Everything that happens to a person is out of his/her own control. In Oedipus the King, events take place and people are left wondering whether it is by fate or choice. Consequently, the choices that people make in their daily activities is what influences their lives and shapes their life as opposed to fate.
Ancient Greeks believed in fate, which is a power beyond the control of human beings that determines the life of an individual. In Oedipus the King, Laius was king and he committed an offense against the gods. A curse was thus put on the land - his son would kill him and go ahead and marry his mother, Laius wife. Oedipus was fated to kill his father and marry his mother. The prophecy comes to pass after Oedipus kills an old man at a crossroads due to his pride in denying the man passage. He doesn’t know that this is his own father, though, until many years later.
