In her book, "The Road," McCarthy presents the journey of a boy and his father after the collapse of the world. The book is all about an apocalypse and the world of terror that the people have to struggle in order to survive (Rambo 99). The boy and his father walk through ashes as they make a way to escape the extremely cold weather of the winter. Eventually, the boy's father dies, and the boy has to survive and carry on his father's memory. Therefore, the boy's survival acts as a testimony to the persistence of hope and regeneration.
The boy remains hopeful even after the death of his father whom he saw his health decline with time. This is an indication of hope because the boy had to move on with life in the new world. A new family took him, and the woman was friendly. "She would talk to him sometimes about God. He tried to talk to God, but the best thing was to talk to his father, and he did talk to him, and he didn't forget (McCarthy 241). The woman's intention of speaking the word of God to the boy is an indication of hope and regeneration. It shows regardless of the fact that the boy has lost all his family members, he still needs to survive with the hope of having a good life. The boy adapts living with the new family. Regeneration is also presented in the fact that the boy's survival will help in carrying forward the father's memory.
In addition, the people in the novel have resulted in a survival mode of cannibalism. The survival of the boy is an indication of the hope because he has to survive in such a competitive world with limited resources regardless of the death of his father. It is difficult to erase the image of a child and burnt flesh, especially given the fact that they do not have a father to take care of them. McCarthy describes the land as "cauterized terrain," "dull sun," and "ashen scabland" (McCarthy 12, 13). In the real world, one could be wondering how a fatherless boy would be able to survive in such a horrible environment. Hence, the survival of the boy is an indication of the hope that they of living on to the next moment. The author depicts hope and parental love in a world full of terror.
