Pictorial Problem Project—Pinocchio
Stories revolving around man-made monsters are not a new phenomenon. People have curved monsters or puppets as a way of making money or showing dominion. However, sometimes, the relationship between the master and the servant is plagued with conflict. When the slave feels oppressed by their master, they may resort to violence to regain their freedom. Perhaps The Black Jacobins captures the essence of power quite well. The author depicts the revolution as a struggle between people who want individual control and those who want to empower groups (Broten 25). In other words, he shows that myopic and greedy people abuse power, which promotes needless destruction and violence. However, those who want the power to help others help to curtail violence. They may only resort to violence to protect themselves. This pictorial project uses the selected drawings from Adventures of Pinocchio, particularly of Geppetto and Pinocchio, to explore the historical issue of human-made monsters.


This picture gives an impression of what Pinocchio looked like after he got the comically long nose. One gets the idea that monsters are ugly creatures. They instill fear in people with their terrible features. One can also see the singing cricket that Pinocchio would later kill. The cricket served as the voice of reason. When Pinocchio was abusing the man who made him, the cricket rebuked him (Lorenzini 59). As a result, he resorted to violence for being made to do the right thing.


In the picture, Geppeto is curving himself a marionette. He wanted to make a living as a puppeteer. Unfortunately, things do not work out according to his expectations because he was given an enchanted piece of wood in the first place. Immediately he curves out the marionette's legs. He abuses him and starts running away, which prompts people to arrest him (Lorenzini 102). The people who arrested him could only be preventing violence against the creature. I think that the puppet ran away because it felt like Geppeto wanted to exploit it for money. He was going to be his slave for a long time. Later, when he returned, he killed the talking cricket for correcting him. Therefore, instead of bringing the intended benefits, the puppet evokes fear and resentment. Also, the creature was an omen from the start, because he came out of charm. I think the lesson here is that wrong persons transform the behaviors of good people so that they become violent or ruthless.


This picture captions the puppet running away just after the legs were made. It instilled fear and pity among people, as is evident in the photo. For Geppetto, Pinocchio was a disobedient and unthankful boy. For the people who arrested the older man, he was a wicked person who exploited his slave.


The picture depicts the Fairy with Pinocchio after he lied to her about the gold pieces he was given to take to Geppeto.
