Introduction
Procrastination refers to the process of putting off things which need to be done presently. Everyone procrastinates. It involves delaying actions or activities despite foreseeable undesirable consequences. Procrastination is something that we all have done and some point in the future will probably do again. It is essential to know that procrastination is completely different from laziness. It is an active process where one chooses to do something else instead of the task that you know you should be doing. In contrast, laziness is associated with inactivity and unwillingness to act. When procrastinating, people normally ignore an unpleasant activity, but likely a more important task, in favor of an activity which is more enjoyable or easier. This paper will evaluate the reasons why people procrastinate and also explain why procrastination is both bad and good.
Procrastination is an issue of interest to many individuals because it is a common human tendency. It is estimated that about twenty percent of adults have regular cycles of procrastination and that almost seventy to ninety percent of undergraduates are a chronic procrastinator. Some individuals who usually put off their activities assert and maintain that they are work best under tight deadlines. Psychologists view procrastination as avoidance behavior. People usually avoid many things and tasks because they cause anxiety and other negative emotions. Additionally, people avoid activities for different reasons, there are those who avoid activities so that they escape negative experiences and there are those who do that so that they can choose a more emotionally positive one because the pleasure associated with a different activity is too tempting. Therefore, understanding about procrastination may help people in making informed decisions regarding their activities. Additionally, people may also understand the benefits and limitations of procrastination.
Contextual Background
Procrastination is a common phenomenon in society today and is ordinary in everyone’s daily life. There are several areas where people are like to procrastinate, for example, deliberately putting off the school assignment when the deadline is overdue, paying for bills after getting barred and shifting ones attention frequently from a task and engaging in other more pleasurable activities. It is also important to note that procrastination may be categorized into different subtitles which include academic procrastination, neurotic procrastination, general procrastination, decision making procrastination and non-obsession procrastination (Sirin, pp.447-455). According to researchers, procrastination may impact production and many people have characterized it as harmful and negative and it is therefore regarded as a serious issue in society (Malikeh Beheshtifar, pp.59-63).
It is estimated that fifteen to twenty percent of the general population usually procrastinate (Steel, pp.65-94). Also, that nearly ninety-five percent of the students who the United States have developed procrastinating behaviors for academic-related activities.
