The words of Douglas and Massingale overwhelmingly support the letter from the Birmingham jail. In the letter, King extensively observes the high level of injustice extended to the black person living in America. He also observes the reluctance of the whites to consider extending justice to the black population. King observes that the injustice is too great that they were left with no option but to hold peaceful demonstrations (King, 122). He significantly uses the concepts of ethos, pathos, and logos to demonstrate why it is important to hold such demonstrations in order to influence the white majority to bring positive changes. Douglas supports these very sentiments. Douglas sarcastically refers to America's Independence Day. It is clear from this writing that only the whites celebrate independence Day. The writings were made 76 years after the country had gained independence. One would expect that 76 years would have enough for the country to have resolved the issues relating to racial injustice. Douglas observes how it has consistently been a nightmare living as a black person in America (Douglass, 66). Racial injustice is the main reason why black person is discriminated against. In raising these sentiments, Douglas is echoing the very observations made by King in 1963.
Massingale also makes observations similar to those made by King. He describes how the black person is still facing injustice in modern times.
