Theme of Love in Poems of Marlowe, Philips, Sidney, and Donne

Renaissance Poetry Question
You should not use any resources beyond your textbook, class notes, and course handouts to complete this exam; use of secondary materials will have a negative impact on your grade.  Information taken from your textbook should include page and line references in parentheses.  You do not need to include a Works Cited page.  Your essays must be equivalent to at least 3 pages, typed and double-spaced in 12 pt. Times New Roman font. 
Question: 
The poetry of the Renaissance to the early 17th century in England represents diverse forms, contexts, and writers.  One common thread in all of these works, however, is that they are expressing cultural beliefs and values about love – whether romantic love, familial love, love of church and country, love of friends and/or supporters, or even love of poetry itself.  Choosing at least 2 works from Group A and 2 poems from Group B (you must use sonnets from different authors), write an essay in which you identify and explain:  1) the type of love represented (i.e. is it romantic love, patriotic love, love of beauty, etc.), 2) the themes or messages conveyed about that love, and 3) the form that the poet uses to express those messages and 4) the style of the poem (i.e. use of figures of speech like personification, symbolism, metaphor and simile, imagery, etc.).  You must be specific in your discussion of the type of poetic form used (for ex. Is this a carpe diem poem? A sonnet? A response poem? Something else?).  You should first discuss each poem individually and then compare and contrast the 4 poems, giving quotes and examples from each.  Be sure to correctly incorporate appropriate vocabulary terms in your essay (use your class notes and vocabulary handout for this).
