After reading chapter 5, my understanding about love and beliefs about intimacy have vastly expanded, as my awareness has been opened to new ideas, regarding relationships and attraction. I have realized that there are many factors that must be examined if we were to truly talk about genuine love. In chapter 5, the author pushes the reader to explore the deeper values and the concepts related to the expression of love.
A person’s emotion is not easily definable. According to the book, relationships must be built slowly, as people should learn and know things and traits of each other to arrive at a level of familiarity with the other person and create a close relationship with another. Positive feelings can be generated from a good relationship such that it provides a reinforcement for self esteem and contentment. Aside from this, a good partnership highlights a dynamic exchange of ideas that lead to growth of both parties. Love is not that easy to understand and explain, but people do know that love is something that can be felt. When two people share the same interests and values, they can much more easily become friends with one another. The chapter reiterates that friendship is a good foundation for good relationships, as it provides an emotional sustenance that can promote an individual’s mental and emotional well-being.
