The Glass Menagerie is Tennessee Williams’ popular play that was first performed in 1944 and catapulted the writer from obscurity to the peaks of success. This play is widely known for its unique autobiographical elements and real-life characters. The author has portrayed himself, his mother and his sister in The Glass Menagerie. On the other hand, Macbeth (full name is The Tragedy of Macbeth) is a play by William Shakespeare, which was premiered in 1606. It sheds light on some bitter truths of society, especially the ones which are related to politics and are leaving numerous psychological and physical impacts on those who seek fame and power. Macbeth most clearly reflects the relationship of the playwright with that of his sovereign.

When it comes to talking about the theme “loss of innocence,” we must admit that the character of Laura is quite impressive. She is a woman who is always concerned about her privacy; she is over-protected and does not love social activities. Most of the times, she depends on others and blames her little daughter for the lack of self-assurance and self-esteem. In simple words, it can be said that Laura has lost her innocence and she always tries to find ways of justifying her carelessness and ignorance. Throughout the play, her role remains that of a protected mother who does not love being social and wants to live in complete isolation. As Laura and Jim meet one another, she quickly shows him the glass menagerie and develops the feeling of being a mature lady who can fall in love. Jim makes Laura feel comfortable, special and unique, which eventually detaches her from the outside world. Soon Laura begins considering it a "blessing in disguise" (Boxill 62), and in the company of Jim, she becomes awkward and difficult to handle. The innocence of Laura’s thoughts and her high school memories get lost at this stage. In her attempt to gain self-knowledge and self-awareness, Laura fails to transform herself entirely.
