Weather Forecast in Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia
Understanding the technicalities of reading aviation information for weather is important for any pilot. It is one of the most essential skills that would prepare him for both the present and future uncertainties that could pose a risk on the flight itself. In this article, I would try to determine the weather information in Hartsfield – Jackson Atlanta International Airport (KATL) in Georgia. This analysis would be based on METAR information for July 07, 2020 as provided by the Aviation Weather Center. Subsequently, I would try to forecast the weather in KATL using a Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (TAF) for the next eight (8) hours. All in all, I believe that an in-depth understanding of these data would make flight training much easier.

The METAR information provided above represents the weather information at the KATL airport in Georgia. This symbol (KATL) represents the ‘station identifier’, which provides a unique identification system. Subsequently, this report was taken on the 7th of the month, at exactly 16:52 Zulu Time. The wind speed is denoted as ‘03006’, where the first three numbers (030) determines the wind speed relative to the True North, and the last two numbers (06) showing wind speed in terms of knots (KT). It also seems that the wind is clear since the visibility is reported to by 10SM, which means that the pilot could see ten (10) Statute Miles from the location of plane. As for the sky condition, the METAR above shows that there are scattered cloud layers (SCT) at around 1600 feet above the ground. There are also broken cloud layers (BKN) at 3200 feet of towering cumulus clouds (TCU) as well as at 5500 and 20,000 feet. At their current altitude the temperature is indicated by the METAR information to be at 28 deg. Celsius and the Dew Point at 2 deg. Celsius.
The preceding section shows a METAR information of the location near KATL airport in Georgia. In other words, this suggests a slight possibility of precipitation, slight gust speed, and cool temperature at the ground level.
