Various texts have been written as an allegory to today's human life and their connection to supernatural powers. For instance, the Christian religion believes that man has to accept their sinful nature for them to be redeemed by the holy spirit. An example of works written as an allegory to man's life is Dante Alighieri's epic poem, the Inferno. Dante's life experience affects the way he portrays the allegory by using the symbols of the fifth circle, Virgil, and the three beasts.
The Fifth Circle, also known as anger, is a symbol of the consequences that sin brings in the life of a human being. While in the circle, everybody was being punished according to the type of sin they had committed when alive. For instance, they come across Filippo Argenti, who was responsible for confiscating Dante's property following the Florence expulsion. The circle is an allegory to today's world, where people commit different types of sin without having concerns about sin's consequences. At some point in life, the sins catch up with a person in a way that they end up regret having committed them. The circle has two groups of sinners. They depict both expressed and repressed types of anger. Such is a presentation of how people express different kinds of anger in their thoughts. In some cases, people fail to see the impact that such anger thoughts might have on their lives. "Upon the filthy waves, thou canst already see what is expected, unless the marsh's fog conceals it from thee" (Inf. 8,10-12). Besides, the fifth circle is a representation of the way people experience the wrath of sin only when it affects them. “My Leader then went down into the boat, and had me enter after him; and only, when I was in it did it laden seem" (Inf. 8,25-27). This explains the reason why most people never learn from their first mistakes. Until they face a negative impact of sin is when they can learn a lesson. Therefore, the fifth circle is an allegory to the sinful nature of human beings.
