The Issues at Stake on Chris Rock's Tamborine

Essay Instructions:

Chris Rock: Tamborine
1) Explain the context of your primary text (what are the various issues at stake, positions people take, and relevance to our discussions?)
2) What’s your thinking so far on that text? (remember that that thinking may change as you conduct your research)
3) Discuss the kinds of research you expect to have to do in order to explore that topic more thoroughly (will you be looking exclusively at scholarly journals? Are there relevant popular resources you may use?).
While your particular primary and secondary texts are up to you, everyone must select from within the following three umbrella topics:
• The empowerment or disenfranchisement of particular social groups through the use of comedy, including race, class, and/or gender
o Consider comics who take on race, class, gender, sexuality explicitly in their work and examine how they engage those topics and to what end.
• The rhetorical value of irony
o Consider comics like Stephen Colbert who employ irony as their primary method of advancing an argument – what are they able to accomplish through those ends and are there limits?
• Rhetorical transgression
o Consider comics who “go too far.” What can an examination of how a particular comic has gone too far help us understand our culture and society? What’s the difference between Tig Notaro and Dave Chappelle?

Text and Film Analysis – Chris Rock: Tamborine
1 Explain your primary text context (what are the various issues at stake, positions people take, and relevance to our discussions?)
1 The primary text in this analysis, written by Roth, focuses on the subtle ideas that were presented by Chris Rock in his famous comedy show on Netflix entitled Chris Rock: Tamborine. Although some various themes and motifs were discussed by Rock, such as marriage, divorce, and politics, among others, one of the issues that stood out was racism.
Mainly, Rock's comedic approach to 're-opening' the idea of systemic racism in a comedic approach helps increase awareness in his audience without making them everyone tense or apprehensive of the issues at hand. As stated by Roth in her article, it seems that Rock's delivery and content help shed more light on systemic racism in America. For example, she noted that Rock advocates are the misleading idea that the United States is continuously making progress in the fight against racism. Specifically, he said that just because the beatings are getting less, this does not mean that we are getting better. Instead, it merely creates a tendency where the abuse gets shifted towards another medium or direction.
Accordingly, I believe that this is highly relevant to our discussion because it helps shed light on the America that we live in today that most people tend to ignore. Although it is clear that the fight towards equality has reached tremendous lengths compared to the state of affairs before, Rock's comedic punchlines would show some of the most common yet ignored realities that point out how much do we have left in our fight against racism.
2 What's your thinking so far on that text? (remember that that thinking may change as you conduct your research)
2 So far, upon reading the class texts and the article regarding the Rock's performance, I believe that it would be interesting if I will focus on the daily realities that are commonly experienced by the minorities in the United States. Mainly, I would like to direct my research on how a comedic approach could help improve awareness about such realities compared to traditional discussions done in the academic or political ...
