Tessie Hutchinson Character Analysis

Essay Instructions:

Write an essay (500-600 words) which analyzes one of the characters listed below from a short story we have read in this course. Your essay will answer this question: What three major personality traits does the character exhibit within the short story? Your paper will point out and explain three qualities that significantly define who this fictional person is. The essay should provide evidence from the story to prove or illustrate your thesis.
I am interested in your personal (but reasonable) analysis of a character based on the evidence in the short story, not what other critics have said.
Requirements of the Character Analysis Essay:
• The essay will present a thesis statement in the introduction, and the body paragraphs of the essay should provide evidence from the story to prove or illustrate your thesis.
• The essay must contain at least four direct quotations from the short story itself.
• The essay may use my PowerPoint notes for the story as a source. Do not use any other sources for this essay besides the short story itself and possibly the PowerPoint.
• Use MLA 8th ed. (2016) format and documentation style for this research paper, with in-text parenthetical citations and a works cited page.
• The last page of the paper will be a Works Cited page, which lists the short story as your primary source, and possibly my PowerPoint as a secondary source, if you quote, paraphrase, or summarize from it.

During the lottery, she notices that Mr. Summers who was officiating the lottery was not fair. She shouts up You didn't give him time enough to take any paper he wanted. I saw you. It wasn't fair. She did this despite knowing that her complaint would not be taken into consideration. This is bravery and women of this generation need to be brave (Coulthard 54).
The resistance that Tessie showed forced her husband to shout at her to keep quiet. It was a sign of disrespect. This shows that this particular society in this story had no place for women to be heard. It only takes courageous women like Tessie to change the believe.
Tessie is symbolic of the oppression women go through. This story portrays women as being instruments of work. They do everything while the men relax. It also seems that their husbands never consult them on anything do not consult women. She arrives late in the lottery and when asked why she says she had forgotten what day that was. This is ironic because her husband arrives in time. This leaves us wondering whether the husband just left without even telling her where he was going. She says …forgot what day it was. This is o...
