After the Second World War, the status of the United States as a superpower was affirmed. The U.S.’s entry into the war offered the allied powers the much-needed advantage they wanted. Since then, the country has remained at the top and continues to flaunt its might from time to time. However, recently, the U.S. has shown the world that it is deeply flawed and that its downfall will come from within. In a pandemic, one would expect that a country would put down its tools and come together for the greater good. One would also expect that in such a time, the status quo would be thwarted, albeit for a moment to help maintain order and protect lives. However, in the U.S., this was not the case. The world has seen the country drive itself further down by sticking to its nationalistic and capitalistic principles that are embraced so dearly by its president. The pandemic has demystified these principles and showcased that the U.S. needs to adopt a different approach for the nation to beat coronavirus. Provided herein is an elucidation of how the nation’s capitalistic and nationalistic mindset that furthers inequality made it incredibly difficult for the wealthiest nation to handle Covid-19.
President Trump has not been shy to share his nationalistic views. Well, his slogan in the 2016 elections ‘Make America Great Again’ was as clear as he could have been. However, there are times when one has to shed their policies and beliefs for the greater good. However, with Trump, this has not been the case even during the pandemic. There is nothing wrong with being a nationalist. However, Trump has made it clear that he believes that the problems in America are a result of outside forces. So, since assuming power, his infatuation with the border and curtailing the flow of people into the United States was quite obvious. In the pandemic, he went for the borders first. As Yong writes, he issued travel bans, which he notes are “woefully inefficient at restricting either travel or viruses.” Also, this drove the focus of the American people outside again instead of looking inside for its problems. Up to this point, there were no major announcements with regard to the virus. The nationalistic views of the president had once again misled everyone into looking outside instead of looking for solutions to the ailing healthcare sector.
