Barnes and Noble is a brick and mortar retailer whose major competitor in an online retailer called Amazon.com. Both retailers have different operating expenses and being web-based Amazon does not have the expense of retail space (store costs), inventory carrying costs and labor costs. However, Barnes and Noble must compete with Amazon to stay profitable as Amazon continues to take market share away from B&N. In addition, B&N has to deal with the restrictive environment of the coronavirus in their retail stores.

In order to compete with Amazon effectively, the primary strategy is to ensure that the business is online. In this regard, there is a need to combine the physical retail center with an online platform that will allow clients to order books without coming to the brick and mortar retailer shop.
