A Stranger in A Strange Land
It was all well until I joined junior secondary school. I was a disciplined kid, but I liked to lie. This meant that I would often get into trouble at home. But when I joined my new school, everything changed. The school was far away from home, and even the journey there made me feel abandoned. My mother escorted me on the first day because she had to. My father was elsewhere earning a living for his family. After everything had checked out, a student was called and asked to show me to the dormitory. He helped me spread my ben, and I remember being quite funny. The thrill of that moment and the new school was something I would realize later at night to be a mask for what I was truly feeling. That night I cried myself to sleep. I could not bear being so far from home. The following morning, we woke up so early, and unlike home, there was no one to tell me twice. I had to clothe as fast as I could, brush my teeth, and head for morning preps.
I was already feeling like a stranger in a strange land. The dormitory smelt like soap and blankets, and everyone seemed faster than me. Breakfast was nice, but I could not help feeling the intense cold of the place. It was a semi-arid area where like the desert, the nights were frigid. But when we went to class, all that seemed to vanish away under the warmth. I noticed my class had way more students than in my previous school. I was going to have to work hard to beat all these people. Despite this, they all looked at me with the need to know me—the new student in the class. I felt special because of this. Furthermore, every teacher who came to class wanted to know who the new student was. I proudly said my name as everyone else looked at me intently. But the teachers appeared stricter here. They looked even much more knowledgeable here. For sure, the responsibility of instructing so many students required an added level of intelligence. It was captured in their classes how they taught what they thought was essential and what was not.
