The Emergence of the Individual and the Ambiguity of Freedom

Essay Instructions:

“The Emergence of the Individual and the Ambiguity of Freedom,” Escape from Freedom, Erich Fromm. pp. 23-38.

What is INDIVIDUATION? What are its two main aspects? What are two possible results of growing individuation? What role to “primary bonds” play in the process of individuation? Explain at least one example (Biblical myth, evolution, childhood, or mastery of nature).
In order to avoid “moral aloneness,” Fromm says there must be a “SPONTANEOUS RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MAN AND NATURE” (31). Can you imagine what he means? Are there any real life examples of this?
“There is only one possible, productive solution for the relationship of individualized man with the world: his active solidarity with all men and his spontaneous activity, love and work, which unite him again with the world, not by primary ties but as a free and independent individual” (35). DO YOU SEE ANY CONTRADICTION IN THIS STATEMENT? EXPLAIN WHY/WHY NOT.
Fromm claims that the Reformation laid the groundwork for a growing process of “individuation.” Explain more specifically how this happened.
