Part One
In this story, Arcite and Palamon formed a single character analysis since they have the same personality, and they have everything that qualifies them to be knights. They are sworn to protect one another and to assist one another. They have knightly qualities because of taking an oath of brotherhood and these are can be demonstrated by their dueling, fighting and falling desperately in love with Emily. Emily was excellently perfect that only the perfect knight had to fall in love with her. The rivalry between Arcite and Palamon was their fate. The role conflict between the brother knights was a way in which they were fulfilling their knightly roles.
Arcite and Palamon were the two knights who came from Thebes. The presence of Duke Theseus was important in the story since he was the noble king of Athens. Duke Theseus was committed expanding his kingdom. He captured and jailed Arcite and Palamon (two Thebes armies) after the two were found fight against Duke Theseus’ soldiers. While in prison, Arcite and Palamon saw a woman and they had to do anything to win the woman even it was to denounce their oaths. Arcite was released because his friend Duke Perotheus defended him to Duke Theseus. But Arcite was banned not to be seen within Dukedom. This was a disadvantage to him because he would be able to see the woman. Arcite thus joined and became part of the court of Theseus to remain close to Emily, and after several years he became Duke’s trusted friend. Palamon later managed to escape the prison.
Later, Palamon and Arcite were caught fighting in love for Emily, and the two became great rivals. While Palamon committed his prayers to Venus (god) to enable him unite with Emily, Arcite committed his prayers to Mars (god) to enable him become victorious in the fight. Emily committed her prayers to Diana (god) praying for the preservation of her chastity, and it if possible to be married by a man who would love her most. Confusion was caused in...
