Gregor’s Change and the Possible Implications to Himself and On Those Around Him
Introduction
Published in 1915, The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka is one of the most symbolic novels ever. The novella revolves around Gregor, the protagonist, and his family, including father, mother, and sister, alongside other characters. The storyline is built around a family in debt and highly dependent on the protagonist, Gregory. Gregory works hard on her end and ensures that debt is paid and daily bills managed. However, one morning Gregory transitions and is no longer human but vermin, meaning he could no longer fend for the family. As a result of Gregory’s metamorphosis, the family is forced to find ways to survive without him. Every passing moment between Gregory and his once-close family becomes a pain to the extent that the family is planning to get rid of him because they now feel that they are trapped in Gregory’s shadows. Gregor’s change brought about massive implications to himself as well as those around him.
Metamorphosis
Gregor, a traveling salesman and the main protagonist in the novel, undergoes a change that significantly impacts his life and the lives of those around him. Gregor, before the change, was a salesman who, despite disliking his job, had to endure its pressures due to the family obligations that awaited him. Gregor, before he changed into a bug, was like a bumblebee. He was entirely busy juggling between family and work. As quoted, "For the time being, however, I must get up because my train leaves at five" (Kafka 4). The quote explains how Gregor navigated through day-to-day schedules like a bee. Years before his career in sales, Gregor served in the military. As quoted from the novel, "On the wall just opposite hung a photograph of Gregor from the time of his military service" (Kafka 16). Gregor’s life has been changing ever since, right from a military man to a salesman and now to a bug.
Gregor's major change was his transition from a salesman to bug. This phase of change, however, meant that his family had to deal with him differently. Gregor has suddenly transformed into a large bug and now going to spend the rest of his life as a bug. His life as a salesman made him feel like a mindless systematic creature and was already feeling worthless like an insect. He worked in a tedious job, had little meaningful interaction with those around him, and was a slave to debt and people who cared more about his earnings. The pressure was too high and often made him feel dehumanized, and transforming into an insect was probably a solution to his problem.
Change impacted him and those around him and changed perceptions and occurrences. In the early stages of the novel, Mr. Samsa is portrayed using a walking stick and newspaper to force Gregor into the room.
