Greek Theater
This is a journal in regard to the Oedipus the King who took reign of The Thebes when there were many evils happening in the land. Oedipus was a very successful king who married a woman who was older than her showing new dawn in the land. One of the evils that were in the land was corruption and Apollo tells the King to drive corruption out of the land and not to harbor it any longer (Graspell, pp 631).
As a sign of the new change the King recommends that the person who killed the leader to be brought to the limelight. Tiresias seem to know much and urges the King not to be disrespectful to him. It is later when the Oedipus comes to know that he is a Thebian and was really the former king’s son. In addition he had married his own mother. This was indeed a tragedy in the land after the previous one which was the death of the former King. It is then clear from this that a man cannot control his destiny and despite how an individual fights it he cannot change its course. Another tragedy that befell the land was the death of the Queen who hang herself and the Oedipus being driven out of the land.
In conclusion, the play is based on the tragedies that the Thebes went through after the initial tragedy of Sophocles’ death. The land was attacked by their enemies and many people died during the war. The coming back of Oedipus was a sign of change and despite bringing the change that was expected, many more tragedies followed which led to the cursing of his own ...
