Essay Instructions:

After reading the assigned chapters in the textbook, select one entry on which to conduct an ethical analysis. You will need at least two additional scholarly sources besides the entry in the textbook to support your stance. Find valid, scholarly sources through the San Jac Online Library Databases to support your stance. Your must have at least two claims/reasons to support your stance. You will also need to address the counterargument to each claim/reason you make. The counterargument is typically only a small portion of the paper, but it shows the reader that you are aware of both sides of the argument.
This helps to strengthen your argument. Your essay should be 500-1000+ words in length following proper MLA format.
Consider how the rhetorical appeals of ethos, logos, and pathos are used and how they are intertwined in the argument. Consider how the use of only one appeal is often ineffective; logos without the use of ethos can be unsuccessful. It is this interconnectedness of ethos, logos, and/or pathos that drives the persuasive technique. Consider how the rhetorical appeals are being used to persuade the audience and whether those appeals are effective while arguing for or against the ethical dilemma presented in the entry. Writing an ethics paper requires you to choose a topic and argue whether it is ethical or not, using facts such as
statistics to support your position. For the purposes of this assignment the following terms mean:
Stance – the side of the argument you are arguing
Claim/reason – the reasons that support your stance/argument
Counterargument – the opposing side of the argument
Rebuttal (refute) – your argument against the counterargument
Be sure that you are addressing an ETHICAL DILEMMA in the paper, not just the controversy
surrounding the topic. Examples:
Controversial topic without an ethical dilemma:
People need to take the Covid-19 vaccine in order for businesses to reopen and human interaction to occur.
This is a controversial issue, but there is no ethical concern in this thesis statement. There must be an ethical aspect to the topic.
Ethical Dilemma topic:
US should focus on their own population and allow children under the age of 18 to take the Covid-19 vaccine in order to allow schools to reopen and teachers to feel safe, rather than assisting the global community in vaccinating the population of less wealthy counties. Rather than giving the Covid-19 vaccine to children under the age of 18 who are at low risk of infection and can have controlled/limited interactions with others, the US should offer their vaccine surplus to countries that are struggling to vaccinate their elderly. The ethical issue of the US taking care of itself rather the helping other countries or the US helping other
countries over itself is addressed in these two arguments. It goes beyond arguing the controversial issue and discusses the ethical side of the issue – being part of the global community by helping others.

Ethical Dilemma –
Giving Booster shots to Americans vs. Distributing Vaccines to Poorer Nations
* Introduction
The Covid-19 Pandemic has spread throughout the whole world like a wildfire. It ravaged economies big and small, killed millions of people, and even forced most of us to go into seclusion, among others. Fortunately, the current rate of vaccinations has consistently increased in every nation. Several countries have inoculated a significant number of their population, with the wealthiest countries having the highest percentage of vaccination among others. However, wealthy countries like the United States have almost reached ‘herd immunity’, various strains of the virus have sprung up all over the world thereby increasing the risks of the ineffectiveness of current efforts against the pandemic. Thus, one of the ethical dilemma is whether or not the United States (and other wealthy countries) should prioritize distribution of vaccines to poorer countries or giving ‘booster shots’ to their own constituents CITATION Rea21 \l 1033 (Reardon). All in all, it is my belief that it would be better to distribute vaccines to poorer countries rather than prioritizing giving vaccine shots.
Ethical Dilemma
One of the reasons why I believe that it would be better to distribute vaccines to other countries is because of the fact that the non-distribution of vaccines increases the risk of new strains appearing. In the article written by Reardon, she noted that while it is an accepted fact that new strains appear when the rates of infection are high, there are no studies to back up that booster shots help increase the antibody count for healthy young individuals. In stating this, the author cited various st...
