Should there be a mandate for the COVID vaccine?
As the world battles what seems to be a never-ending pandemic, the need to adopt long-lasting solutions become evident. As vaccination efforts continue to combat Covid-19, cases of the virus are surging due to the Delta variant. Governments and institutions worldwide have now turned to vaccine mandates to slow down this variant and achieve complete protection for all citizens. A vaccine mandate is a regulation that necessitates all persons to be fully vaccinated if they have to work, go to school, travel, eat at restaurants, or travel. Vaccination mandates are not a new concept to Americans. Everyone had to undergo certain vaccinations as a child or before travel. Despite numerous objections, there should be a mandate for the covid vaccine as it is a severe and lethal virus. It furthers civil rights, other protective measures have failed, and vaccination is the most effective method of combating this virus.
The primary reason mandatory vaccination should be done is that vaccination is the most effective method of fighting Covid-19. According to Michael Greenwood, the mass COVID-19 vaccination campaign instituted in 2020 saved the lives of two hundred and seventy-nine thousand people in the US. Also, it prevented the hospitalization of over one million others (Greenwood pars 1-2). The vaccines lessen the risk of contracting and spreading the virus. While it does not entirely prevent infection, it leads to mild symptoms and reduced severity of sickness, making it easy for the affected to recover quickly and lead everyday lives. Additionally, it makes it harder for the virus to spread and replicate, eliminating the chances of mutations and severe variants coming up. Consequently, fighting this pandemic will become more accessible, as equal protection for all is made possible.
The mandate for the COVID vaccine should be implemented as the virus is severe and lethal. Up to date, the virus is estimated to have affected over 259 million people worldwide and killed over 5.1 million people. According to the Center for Disease Control, 47.7 million Americans have contracted the virus in the US, with 766 000 of them succumbing (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Moreover, out of the forty-five million Americans who have recovered, a significant number of them have developed lingering health complications such as breathing problems, heart complications, kidney damage, stroke, temporary paralysis, among others (D'Adam, Thomas, and Joseph 913-914). With such severe consequences coming about due to the virus, mandatory vaccination to prevent these consequences is vital.
