Sexual Harassment Against Women
Ladies and gentlemen, over the years, women have endured great struggles to achieve the rights they enjoy in the world today. They have had to march in the streets, demanding the right to vote and brought to a halt government operation so that they can get equal working opportunities and pay. In the twentieth century, the world saw a remarkable change in the way we treat our women. But, how comes I ask that we have to be compelled to treat other humans as equal. So much has been said about women and their roles in society. However, let us not forget that men also have their roles. Therefore, it is unfair to limit the freedoms of one gender as opposed to the other. However, it is not the issue of equality and fairness that I intend to bring to the fore. Instead, I want to talk about sexual harassment and especially how it has been subjected to our female gender. I am a student of literature with little experience in the job sector. However, my adventure in school and life has shown me that something needs to change if we are to achieve equality truly. Several women are suffering in silence because they are afraid to speak up about the misdeeds that have been done to them. Some have been able to come out in the open and talk about them. But let us not forget that it takes courage to discuss even the most personal of our details. Therefore, let us spare those who are yet to come forth. At the same time, let us encourage them to voice their experiences so that the perpetrators can learn their lesson. Hollywood has shown us the way forward in dealing with sexual offenders. Let us not stray from the path we have already set on. Two years ago, women and men alike were wearing #MeToo pins in support of our women in the entertainment industry. Many of them came out to expose influential figures that walk the red carpet. This goes to show that with unity, anything can be achieved. It is, therefore, through this ideal that I want us to forge forward.
A study by Durana et al. (2018) found that sexual harassment is still a severe problem, especially in the workplace. The main challenge about this problem, however, is that despite the continuous public uproar, it remains unresolved. According to the authors of the report, sexual harassment persists due to the imbalances that exist in power. There are more men in powerful positions compared to women. This makes it hard for sexual harassment issues within the workplace to be resolved. Women are not occupying enough positions of power, and this makes them vulnerable to constant dismissal by their male leaders. If there were more women in powerful positions, it is more likely that issues of sexual harassment would be taken more seriously. Still, women are yet to become equal holders of power. It is evident that even in fields where women dominate, more men are occupying managerial and supervisory positions. When women are sexually harassed, this affects their lives, prospects, health, and financial independence (Durana et al., 2018). Failing to address sexual harassment against women, therefore, can block a...
