Frost and His Poems: Tackling the Ordinary with Uniqueness
Robert Frost is one of the most celebrated poets of all time. The man is known for his works that describe his favorite places’ life and scenery. The uniqueness of his works can be observed as he remained faithful to the traditional form of poetry despite having the new techniques or ways of writing to entice the readers’ minds (Poets.org; Gerber). In some of his poems, Frost demonstrated pragmatism amid friendship, contemplation amidst escaping an absurd reality, sympathy over mundane human experiences, and companionship through Mending Wall, Birches, Acquainted with the Night, and Tree at My Window, respectively. These works are similar as they all tackle the ordinary occurrences in a person’s life.
Mending Wall talks about pragmatism by demonstrating the humans’ innate desire to become territorial of anything they think belongs to them. The poem illustrated people’s enjoyment in creating tidy lines that distinguished one from another and instigated the significance of limitations and boundaries, often overlooked in contemporary society. These things are overlooked because it is difficult to change society’s customs. This is demonstrated as the poem tells a story about two neighbors who mend the wall that separates them, even as they form a friendship over it. The wall shows that it is best to distinguish one from another and that remaining at the same position, even when the situation has changed, is the most practical decision to prevent encountering changes that may cause difficulty. This is illustrated in the following lines:
I let my neighbor know beyond the hill;
And on a day we meet to walk the line
And set the wall between us once again.
We keep the wall between us as we go.
To each the boulders that have fallen to each.
And some are loaves and some so nearly balls
We have to use a spell to make them balance:
‘Stay where you are until our backs are turned!’ (Frost, lines 12-19).
Additionally, the poem tells the story of two neighbors who meet up every year in the spring to repair the stone wall that divides their fields. The poem explains how excellent fences make good neighbors and how building such walls may help individuals maintain long-term relationships with their neighbors. The poem’s speaker believes that no border is necessary because neither of them has anything valuable to retain in their lawns. However, because his neighbor believes in his customs, he tries to rationalize the construction. He highlights the need for limits and distances in partnerships. The reader is drawn in by the message he offers, which is that most relationships can function effectively with boundaries. Therefore, Frost’s poem, Mending Wall, symbolizes pragmatism amid friendship as practicality can be won over friendship and not vice-versa.
