Poem 1 - Fangorn Forest by Ashley
1 First read the poem and make some lists
The poet presents a list of vivid creativity that attracted my attention;
i) The dark path, through the trees (Stanza 1, line 1)
ii) Travelers slip through the eye (Stanza 1, line 2)
2 Discuss what elements the poem contains
This poem contains several elements. Rhyme, rhythm, alliteration and assonance are outstanding.
i) Rhyme:- The author has used this element sporadically throughout the poem. In stanza 3; 'sound' rhymes with 'bound' (line 2 & 4), 'pace' and 'embrace' (Stanza 2, line 5 & 6)
ii) Rhythm:- The rhythm in this piece has been enhanced by regular length and number of lines in stanza 1 and 2, having four lines each.
iii) Alliteration:- This has been used to enhance the rhythm in stanza 3, line 5. For example, "must move" (Stanza4, line 1)
iv) Assonance: The poet has brought in this element in stanza 1, line 4. For example, "awake and alive" (Stanza 1, line 4) to keep the rhythm alive.
3 Discuss what you like about the poem and why
This poem is likeable due to its simplicity. It is also presented from the omniscient narrator's perspective.
4 What you think the poem is really saying
The poem directly addresses the day to day struggles of humankind to make ends meet, lest they despair and lose it to the cruel life. This is expressed symbolically by the poet in the poem's last line, "Or surrender themselves to Fangorn' s long embrace" (Stanza 4, Line 2.
5 Identify the triggering subject and the real subject
The triggering issue here is the despair in the human struggles. Whereas the main subject is hard work. Each day each human being needs to toil to achieve. Not to surrender....
