Critical Analysis
In her article titled A Safe Space for Freedom of Expression, Christina Paxson is making her argument that students in universities and colleges need to be allowed to speak their minds. In her explication, she notes that it is only through speaking their minds that students will be able to assimilate into today’s society and become responsible adults. She clearly indicates that she is against the idea of gagging statements or comments that appear to make some students uncomfortable. To her, taking the above initiative would mean that students will not be allowed to grow and be a part of conversations that are shaping the world today. Students have been a part of a lot of defining periods and conversations in the country. They have been pioneers and have seen their comments rub off on the entire nation and forced action on many fronts. So, her message is that, gagging or suppressing these voices will lead to a society that runs away from its problems. The article gains its strength from the fact that the sentiments are from the president of Brown University but fails to strongly make use of the appeal to logic and emotion.
Christina Paxson is the current president of Brown University and her sentiments should not be ignored as she is speaking from experience. As a president of a school, Paxson is privy to matters that directly affect the school. She makes good use of her position and even references her school noting that her school seeks to promote a culture that promotes freedom of expression instead of suppressing it. One of the official duties of a school president is to make sure that schools are working as per their plan and are helping churn responsible adults who can be called upon to respond to matters of national interest. Schools and specifically universities are not supposed to churn out individuals who are book-smart only. When one comes out of university, they need to be able to assimilate into the society and be a part of the discussions within the society.
