World Cinema Comprises Artistic And Commercial Films

Essay Instructions:

You should demonstrate that you have read all texts. The response submissions must present a critical analysis on the readings. In other words, students are expected to reflect critically on the films using the given readings. Your response should articulate and discuss the arguments, critics, issues, concepts and themes introduced within both the assigned film AND readings.
DOs and DON’Ts:
• Think about a suitable/creative title for the response.
• What are the central arguments presented in the texts/readings in relation to the
film? Explain them in your essay.
• What are the central artistic/critical/social/cultural/political/historical themes or issues brought into focus by the film?
• How do you connect to these issues/themes? What is your personal, individual thought/response/opinion/experience in relation to the film, and the arguments in the readings?

• End your reflection with one or two central creative question(s) in relation to the film and readings. This question should invite your readers to think further, deeper, about the critical viewpoints/aspects you introduced in your paper. BE CREATIVE!

• DON’T spend a significant part of your assignment, in summarizing or describing a
film’s story, scene, plotline or characters. This information is easily available online and does not constitute a critical reflection.
• Your writing (organization of paragraphs, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and spelling) matters. Usually, a well-organized essay will begin with an introductory paragraph, continue with necessary (at least 2-3) body paragraphs, and end with a concluding paragraph. There should be clear structure within each paragraph (i.e. a coherent thesis statement, followed by supporting information, and a concluding statement). While maintaining coherence and clarity, you should be creative and let your writing be engaging in your way.
• Your paper must be in your own words: plagiarism will not be accepted. If you quote an author or any dialogue from a film, be sure to put the words in quotes to distinguish from your own writing, and have immediately a correct in-text citation. Cite the works addressed (both films and readings) at the end of your response in a bibliography (this is excluded from Word count). Each submission MUST include correct in-text citations, and a bibliography at the end of paper. Use any major citation style (APA, MLA, etc.) as long as it is consistent and correct.
• Don’t mix citation styles. For instance, for APA format please see this link: http://guides(dot)libraries(dot)psu(dot)edu/apaquickguide/intext

• You are encouraged/recommended to research and find other reliable, relevant, scholarly resources on your own (online) that you can incorporate into your response essay and support your arguments with.
• A personal voice and style is encouraged, however ensure a balanced approach to the study, avoiding personal bias as far as possible.

Lumiere brothers exhibited short movies, such as the Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat and Exiting the Factory, which marked rapid development of cinema as a new form of art. The development of American movies was one of the factors that set a basis for the success of Hollywood. The movie industry began thriving in the 1900s because of the emergence of cinemas in large numbers. The overall number of American cinemas rose to 20,000 in 1925. Besides, Americans filmmakers found new markets in the United States, Canada, and other Western countries. However, they had to incur high costs in producing “the master copy” (Nagib, 2006). Afterward, the overseas entry in film production increased overall profitability of film production. Besides, cheap printing price and the introduction of subsidies increased profits even further. Over time, the center of American film moved to Hollywood in Los Angeles. Subsequently, the filmmakers gravitated to Southern California to influence further the development of the industry. Hollywood attracted more filmmakers for its ideal climate characterized by plenty of sunlight, mountains, deserts, and cities.
The Americans perceived Hollywood as a dream factory for movie production. Nagib (2006) posits that low-income urban workers were the main target audience for the early cinema of the United States.
