In Eliza Haywood’s Fantomina” or Love in a Maze the protagonist masquerades as four female characters to evaluate how a man would interact with each one of them. In Ernest Hemingway' Hills Like White Elephants, the writer focuses on the man and the girl on a train heading to Madrid trying to have a conversation, and the girl is worried about an operation. This comparison of style in Fantomina and Hills like white elephants and how there was a shift towards formal realism in 18th-century literature.
In Fantomina, Haywood uses a simplistic style, which was expected for female writers, unlike male writers, but the story is in the erotic genre. This genre was not common in 18th-century British literary works. Fantomina cannot be categorized into any of the existing styles as Haywood mashed different genres together, and her theater experience may have influenced her writing style. Haywood (1) writes that the protagonist is "a young lady of distinguished birth, beauty, wit, and spirit. In the passage, she alludes to societal expectations about women's role and place in eighteenth-century Britain, where high-ranking women were expected to be modest.
