Gypsies and Flamenco in Spain
The history and culture of gypsies in Spain is an important part of their identity as a country. In addition, the music of Flamenco also originated in Andalucia, Spain which is the southern part. The existence of gypsies and Flamenco make their country even more interesting to discover that is why they will be tackled here. All countries have their own uniqueness, which makes gypsies and Flamenco a significant trademark of Spain.
An ethnic group that comes from outside the country are called “gypsies” and there is no way of knowing how many of them are in Spain. According to the U.S. Library of Congress, the first gypsies to arrive in Spain came from India and entered Europe back in 1425 and 1447 in Barcelona (2017). The gypsies in Spain are identified by 2 main groups: the gitanos and hungaros depending on their social class and culture. Based on Minority Rights Group International, this division shows that they were not united – the gitanos belong to the mainstream and the hungaros are denied by the gitanos (2017). When the time of Franco came, Gypsies were killed and harassed while they spread in other European areas under the Nazis.
Flamenco is a popular part of the Spanish culture because there is a mystery in its origin.
