People often pay tribute to blue-collar workers by praising their dignity or physical stamina. But according to Rose, people rarely celebrate the intellect of the blue-collar workers (5). Rose celebrates the intelligence of the blue-collar workers, and challenges the assumption that blue-collar jobs require less intelligence and less schooling (Rose 7). It is absurd that people in the present society still believe that blue collar jobs are more manual, less important, and less intellectual than white-collar jobs. People have stereotypes that blue collar jobs are no big things. This assumption is wrong. In this paper, a blue-collar occupation is examined, and explanation is given how such occupation requires higher degree of intelligence than what is commonly believed. In addition, perspectives and insights from Rose’s essay are used to support arguments.
Direct sales occupation is a good example of blue-collar job, which requires a lot of personality, advanced skills and a bit of timing or luck that require thinking strategically in order to become successful. Direct sales occupation requires technical training, advanced skills, effective oral and written communication and high social intelligence. They work in positions which require interactions with customers. The tasks of direct sales occupation have impact on emotional, mental and physical health of salespeople. The tasks are quite demanding. For example, a direct seller is expected to knock out and talk to at least 40 customers before noon, and then additional of 20 sales contacts between 1pm and 5pm. Direct salespeople often conduct the hunt and peck technique to prospect where to find success. It, therefore, needs high intelligence, although most people often look down upon direct salespeople such as hawkers and merchandisers who walk and sell things in the streets.
