“The town in which Middle Sister lives is characterized by restrictive and dysfunctional conformity. Women both enforce and subvert this conformity. Within the novel, the power and authority of women is equal to, if not more powerful than, that of the masculine military, paramilitary, and politicians”.

Feminist Look on Milkman by Anna Burns
Introduction
Set in the 1970s, Anna Burns' Milkman describes through its narrative gender bias and internalized toxic masculinity (Burns). If not equal to men, women are superior in enforcing power and authority. It means that women show or are known for authoritative behaviors that intimidate the people around them. Tablets Girl is one of the female characters that show intimidating behaviors in the town (Decker). Her characteristic negatively manifests courage and initiative because she dares to advance on and take advantage of people.
Body
In a traditionally patriarchal society, authority, courage, and initiative are of masculine or male characteristics (Bolzendahl, and Myers 764). Men hold power over decision-making, familial support, and even career-building. Women's traditional role is for the kitchen and child-rearing at home (Bolzendahl, and Myers 765). After years of feminist protests and misogynistic battles, women have started doing what men were doing that the former could not (Bolzendahl, and Myers 765). However, instead of giving an equal opportunity for women, it furthers the idea that masculinity is the only character, there can ever be (Habiba, Rabia, and Ashfaq 219).
Tablets Girl's societal role may seem as if she has become of equal importance to men. Strength and authority may imply that Tablet Girl is now as competent in society because she does what men are known to do (Decker). The problem in this role is that it still denies women of their character. The fact that masculinity is superior dismisses and continues to undermine the existence of feminine roles (Habiba, Rabia, and Ashfaq 219).
