Realism in “The Boor”
The play “the Boor” by Anton Chekov is one of the top examples of dramatized realism. There are several literary devices and techniques used in the essay that further the theme of realism. For example, a dominant theme in the play is ‘flashback’ that comes into play whenever Mrs Popov recalls her husband (Kisak 13). However, even in her memory, she remains realistic as she talks about “love letter to another woman” and other condemnable characteristics (Kisak 87). The play also involves frequent use of imagery. Popov often gives a wordy sketch of how she and her husband used to be at different places and engaged in different activities (Chekhov 27). These images help readers to feel as though they were at the places and occasions being described, which accentuates the sense of realism.
At the same time, realism is advanced by the use of symbolism. For example, Luka compares Popov to ‘spiders’ where spiders stand for fear of light. The symbol fits her personal...
