The book "handmaid's tale" by Margret Attwood is a feminist novel that illustrates the threats of women in a society that had brutalized by their status and almost made it criminal to be a man. This book depicts a world that is cruel such that it does not allow women to enjoy their freedom. In this book, women are depicted as objects of male satisfaction and desires. In the novel, the relationship between Offred and Moira represents female friendship. On the other hand, Gilead claims to promote harmony between the two women. In the book, Moira is a woman of a resilient character whose past experiences and determination inspired her activities within the regime of Gilead. Consequently, Moira is a role morel to the handmaids because she is courageous and inspired by the beliefs of the regime she established. Moira is also represented as a free spirit Moira is a great friend of Offred with who she can trust and seek comfort from. The purpose of this essay is to analyze the significance of Moira in the novel “Handmaid’s Tale.”
In the book, Moira is portrayed as a lesbian and a feminist as well. Through this, the strength of Gilead is depicted even in circumstances when the character of Moira is still broken down. In the novel, Moira is caught and taken to the 'Jezebels' which was a brothel. According to Atwood, Moira chooses to be a lesbian while she was still in college (Atwood). Moira wanted to be different and she still gets to do this even at 'Jezebels. In the novel, the author asserts that “woman on woman… turns them on.” This clearly shows that Moira was a lesbian.
In the book, Moira is a determined woman. The determination of Moira for her survival teaches her how to be dangerous and selfish. Moira is a significant character who acts as a connection to the past of Offred. In the book, there are several occasions when Offred has referred to her friendship with Moira. Before the establishment, of the system. For example, Offred states that “There was time we didn’t hug… she was gay….she said I didn’t turn her on.” Moira is a very good friend of Offred who she trusts. In the book, Moira is depicted as a flamboyant individual who freely jokes regarding her sexuality so that she can comfort Offred. Moira is very different from Offred because Offred is very out-going and bold. Additionally, she has a brash and vulgar language. The fact that Moira is permitted to be gay depicts how much there is liberty in the pre-Gilead values.
Moira is also a mentor to the other handmaids particularly Offred her friend. Moira is a courageous woman. She is also very determined. According to the handmaids, Moira is an epitome of courage and determination. In the novel it is asserted that “you cannot let her go slipping…..that stuff is catching.” For example, there is an incident in the novel when Janine portrays her weakness IN THE Red Center.
