1. A substance existence is not dependent on the existence of mind thus it is distinct from the mind except God (Descartes p 3). To justify his claims, Descartes uses religious and scientific motivation as proof. The religious aspect refutes claim of irreligious people who only believe that the mind’s immortality is based on mathematics while the absence of mentality from the nature of physical things is key to Descartes mind and substance distinction.

Although he rejected Aristotle form and final casualty argument, Descartes accepted the efficient causality because “there must be at least as much reality in the efficient and total cause as in the effect of that cause,” (Secada, p 61). This implies that something cannot come from nothing. Therefore, everything happens because of something else.
