Part I:

Choose one video from this week's Craft in America series and discuss the subjects' description and perceptions of craft work in 2 paragraphs or more. How does the subject portray this kind of work? Do they present a romantic or realistic view? Explain your choice and provide specific details from the video that demonstrate your views. As a reminder on the definition of "romanticism" as it relates in literary interpretation:

Craft in America is a PBS television series which vividly depicts the traditions surrounding handmade items in the United States. We are focusing on the episode called “Industry (Handmade in the Creative Economy).” The episode is located in the Week 2 Video folder. I chose to watch the video about Joe Cunningham, a quilt maker. Joe was a professor and a musician and enjoyed traditional materials. In 1979, he started making quilts professionally and teaching other individuals. He portrays passion and romanticism in his work, and being in a female-dominated industry is why I chose a video about him. In addition, Joe expresses admiration and everyday workers and ordinary people. Joe says he enjoys working with women in Gee’s Bend and friends (Craft in America). He notes that seating and working together as a group feels musical as everyone takes their time with the cloth, unlike machines. Further, he relates to the pattern and nature as he randomly picks fabric from his clothes and something unique. In one of his quilts, he represents landscapes and a cloud and describes the art as his favorite.
Additionally, Joe enjoys freedom and rigidity as he can pick fabric by chance and makes a pattern that seems musical and artistic. For instance, he collected some fabric in Ghana and created a quilt that he named Patch Work Cloth. He just patched the materials to...
