Contributions of Literary Form to the Meanings
The literary form of the message determines the scope of literary devices and techniques that an author or poet can apply to a work of art. Besides, it informs the type of structure and scheme that go into the organization of text (Jones 55). The texts chosen for this analyses have profound messages arising from well-placed aphorism, repetition, metaphors, and chiasmus accentuated by the use of figurative language used with higher density in stanza than an excerpt from the pros.
First passage picked for the analysis is the last stanza from the song “Zhon Zi” taken from the Book of Songs. The stanza highlights a confusing situation and an impossible position where the poet finds herself. She feels attracted to a fictitious lover Zhong Zi’s advances while simultaneously conscious of the consequences of an open invitation. Here, the poet uses the persona of a girl who is eager to save her social reputation when confronted by her natural hunger for love (Anonymous; Kharbe 25). She highlights the confusion with the use of chiasmus that gives a sense of completion of her thought. The entire structure of the song is replete with repetition that depicts emphasis on something unavoidable (Anonymous). For example, at one point, she is quoted as concluding, “But I’m afraid of what people will say.” She makes similar utterance in reverse order by saying, “But of all that people say, Indeed I’m afraid” (Anonymous). The final line is concluding where she sees her liberating instincts surrendering against the fear of losing her face in her family and society. Chiasmus involving twist of structure not only makes the reader enjoy the flow but is also suggestive of the completion of a confused thought-pattern.
Many objects in the stanza are metaphoric. For example, “garden” and “hardwood” that the poet “has planted” are the assets that the Zhong Zi is aiming to trespass. This transgression can be understood as an attempt of sexual seduction or merely an invitation of love. However, the sense of an assault is has gotten so mature in that last stanza that the reader is compelled to believe that Zhong Zi is close to an extreme move after making incremental advances (Anonymous; Jones 28). These metaphor require readers to unleash their imagination in the quest for true meanings that attached to the symbolic value of each object used in the poem.
The stanza may also serve as a real example of the use of allegory where Zhong Zi represents emerging liberal thoughts while the poet’s attraction symbolizes how these patterns grab youth’s mentality. At t...
