Colonialism as expressed In The Tempest and Heart of Darkness
Colonialism is one of the themes that has been raised in both William Shakespeare’s play The Tempest and Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkness. In both cases, the colonialism theme comes out as an act that has been dominated by the white people from Europe who finds a way to other people’s land. The settlers then establish their authority in the properties to squander the resources. In Heart of Darkness, it is clear that the colonizer is white people of European, and the colonized are Africans from Congo, a country in Africa where the plotting of the story is set. On the contrary, the plot setting in and identity of the colonized and the plot setting is unknown as they are portrayed as fictional. This paper shall provide a comparison of how the theme of colonialism has been expressed in both texts.
Expression of manipulation in the texts
The theme of colonization is expressed in two significant ways that are similar in both William Shakespeare’s The Tempest and Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. First, both authors use the aspect of manipulation to highlight colonialism. This comes out well in the Heart of Darkness, where ivory becomes the critical reason for colonization. The whites in the novel manipulate the native Africans by establishing some government outposts and laws, which they use to manipulate Africans that they are concerned about their security. However, this does not turn to be valid, according to Marlow. Marlow narrates that the philanthropic act of establishing government posts was an act of pretense as the whites targeted the appointments to man stores where they could do business and satisfy themselves (Hooti et al. p. 60).
William Shakespeare, on his work The Tempest, also presents Prospero at the center of manipulation. Prospero uses his tricks to manipulate Sycorax (Wilson-Okamura and Scott, p. 712). This way, he sneaks into power by subduing Sycorax and takes control over everything on the island. Prospero’s route to the helm of Sycorax is more or less the same as how the Europeans in the Heart of Darkness manipulated their way through to take control of Congo. It is, therefore, convincible to argue that in both texts, manipulation has been used to highlight colonialism.
Secondly, both texts showcase aspects of manipulation by the establishment of law. In The Tempest by William Shakespeare, Prospero is seen to be establishing some order by imposing his culture on the natives in Sycorax island (Wilson-Okamura and Scott, p. 713). This is not different from what the Europeans in Congo did in the Heart of Darkness. Joseph Conrad notes that the European established their own rules and government in the Congo, which helped them to facilitate the ivory, especially along the coastal lines where they had erected government outposts. The similarities in both texts imply that both authors succ...
