Caffeine has various effects on the health system. In the case of daphnia, caffeine can contribute to a rapid heart rate. Research suggests that the metabolism of the daphnia is bound to increase due to an increase in water temperature (Kundu & Singh, 2018). Caffeine increases the rate of metabolism in daphnia, thus making the heart rate to increase. An increase in heart rate occurs as an indication that the daphnia is trying to provide enough oxygen to the cells. Arguably, caffeine can affect the flow of blood in the cells of daphnia.
Caffeine stimulates the release of neurotransmitters. For that reason, caffeine inhibits the cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases enzymes, hence degrading their ability to reproduce the stimulatory signal (“Investigating factors affecting the heart rate of Daphnia,” n.d.).
