Heart of Darkness was written by Charlie Higson, and it examines and evaluates the aspects of civilization and also divulges on the complex as well as dark nature of human beings as presented through two characters, Kurtz and Marlow. Kurtz appears to have a clear comprehension of the power of words, and although he remains to be a mystery to everyone, including Marlow, he appears to have control and influence on the life of the people around him. The downfall of Kurtz occurs when he decides to disregard the insincere and deceptive rules set to govern the European colonial conduct. The literature discusses the Kurtz character as conceptualized by Marlow before and after meeting him.
It is important to note that Kurtz has been recognized to employ power and authority among the people he interacts with. In this regard, he is motivated and determined to thrive and prosper in the remote parts of Congo. Ideally, for Kurtz to succeed, he realized that it was essential for him to create a persona, which would make the people consider him a superior and a potential ruler of the primitive people. Kurtz also pretends that he has undertaken ways of helping the natives so that they can acquire civilizations as it was demonstrated by the Europeans. He embraces the African customs hoping that people would turn to be his servants.
Regardless of how Kurtz is viewed by the people, Marlow is not sure about his thoughts and perceptions about Kurtz. It is necessary to comprehend that every individual appears to admire and cherish him. Marlow, however, has a strong personality, and he rarely follows and believes what other people believe. Therefore, Marlow wants to find and know more about Kurtz; Marlow believes that Kurtz has a big secret and that he has to find more about him before making opinions about him.
It is important to note that since Marlow has not yet meet Kurtz, most of the information he obtains comes from people who have previously interacted with Kurtz. Marlow is made to believe that Kurtz is remarkable. It is after meeting with the accountant of the outer station that Marlow learns what makes Kurtz remarkable. The accountant insists that Marlow will definitely meet Kurtz, and when he tries to enquire more about him, the accountant explains that first-class agent and that he heads an important trading-spot. Additionally, the accountant adds Kurtz, ““sends in as much ivory as all the others put together”” (Conrad, p.35). The accountant suggests that Kurtz may end up attaining an administrative position before long and wants Marlow to inform Kurtz that everything is good at the station after meeting him. Furthermore, when the manager says to Marlow that he intends to report his ““complete want of Judgement”” (Conrad, p.129). Marlow becomes disgusted since he feels that the manager is condemning Kurtz in an untruthful manner and maintains that he thinks he is a remarkable man.
