The Coddling of the American Mind
American universities have created movements to enhance the emotional wellbeing of students. In most cases, students hear words that can upset their feelings and affect the normal psyche towards their studies hence the need to protect them from psychological harm. In this case, professors have to be cautious to avoid using words and ideas that may cause discomfort to the students probably triggered by past experiences. The main aim of this exercise is to make the campuses a safe place for the students by punishing those who don't follow the regulations outlined by the movements even accidentally. Protecting students has helped them to settle well in school without disturbance or emotional fear from verbal harassment resulting in peace around the campuses and splendid performance.
The protection of students has led to a reduction in the rate of mental disorders like depression and anxiety among students on the campus. The cool environment guided by strict rules and regulations helps students to concentrate and focus and nothing else but their education. Previously, many students could suffer from stress leading to severe conditions like mental illness whereby some situations could be irreversible. The idea that a professor, other staff and students had the privilege to utter any word at will made most students uncomfortable and they lived in fear of the harm such situations would cause. Young adults do not have the full capability to think critically even in the slightest cause of stress hence they should receive adequate care from such circumstances. Protection from fear minimizes the occurrence of stress that may lead to severe conditions. Students have gained the freedom to stay comfortably at the campuses without the expectation of any hurting occasions. The peace gained by the scholars leads to total concentration and significant improvement in performance.
Foreign students have gained independence and a sense of belonging in the United States. In most cases, immigrants have an internal fear about the hosts in their new countries and more intimidation and harassment would escalate the issue to worse levels. The protection of students has helped them to settle quickly for their studies because they are assured of safety. Such individuals gain confidence and psyche to work hard from the peace prevailing around the new environments. Many students have gained stability to study better and finish up their studies unlike in the past whereby some people would give up and go back due to harassment and intimidations. The most prevalent issue that would scare students is unfair treatment due to racism. The equality instituted by the rules demands fair treatment to access to resources like the library to all students despite the race. Black immigrants in various America have enjoyed freedom resulting from measures taken to abolish racism. The racial victims receive severe punishments and charges leading to an end in the ill act. All students have gained full capacity to enjoy peace and freedom in different campuses in America despite their races.
