PART 1
Decide which essay you would like to compare to Roxane Gay's essay: James Baldwin's "If Black English Isn't a Language, Then Tell Me What Is?" or Jemele Hill's "Jay-Z Helps the NFL Banish Colin Kaepernick." Once you have decided, write a short (1-2 paragraphs) summary of each chosen essay as a writing exercise. Be sure to identify the author's name, the title of the essay, when it was published, and an explanation of the main claims and evidence used. These summaries should include the most important information about the essays, and can be used in the draft of your essay 2.

PART 2
Use Notice and Focus to identify interesting similarities or differences and The Method to identify patterns of repetition and contrast for both of your chosen essays. These activities should help you see relationships between the essays that are not immediately obvious. You are not comparing the subject of the essays, which is clearly different, but instead focusing on the language (diction) and tone, the evidence used, and/or the method of argument in each essay.

Review WA 4-7 on Comparison/Contrast as you think through these relationships.

PART 3
After this initial evaluation, formulate a claim (thesis) about a particular relationship you would like readers to see. Your claim should be analytical rather than a tally of obvious similarities and differences. Remember that an effective comparison integrates both texts throughout, analyzing each in relation to the other. Use “So What?” to push your analysis and argument further, particularly in the conclusion.
You might use the thesis formula "Difference within Similarity" to help make a strong, analytical thesis that pushes beyond the obvious similarities and differences.

The first essay focuses on finding the truth about why black people have a different culture and unique expression of their people. Many white people are unaware of the struggles of the black people in history, as the previous generations did not want to educate the slaves. The essay delves into the experience of the black people. In the essay, Baldwin talks about how the historical circumstances highlighted the role of language for the black community. Baldwin expounds on the uniqueness and cultural relevance of the black language as a means to navigate reality. He reiterates that the expression and use of language of the black community stems from generations of improper education, maltreatment, and unequal protection of rights. Many black communities live in poverty which affects their access to proper education, healthcare and social services. The author argues that the way of articulation of the black people reveals their authentic plight and struggle.
