Black Lives Matter: Activism and the Social Media Research

Essay Instructions:

For this essay, imagine that the leaders of Black Lives Matter are going to have an organizational meeting, where they will discuss how to move forward in 2017. They want to remain powerful and realize their goals. They have read Gladwell’s essay, and they are considering whether to remain a network or to become a hierarchy. You have been asked to write a letter to the leadership, one that explains which direction they should take. Should they abandon social media? Or should they retain a network format? What should they do, and why?
Ultimately, you have to decide whether you agree with Gladwell as to the effectiveness of social media in activism. It might also help you to consider how effective you feel social media can be. Do you believe it can change the world? Do you believe it is a waste of time that weakens a movement? Or do you believe that its effectiveness lies somewhere in between?
