The south was fairly segregated and there was continued violence along with inequalities that sparked hatred among the people. The Birmingham church bombing was an act of white supremacy that was directed at the African American community and given that the church was a common meeting ground for most of the civil rights leaders. It formed the best place to launch an attack; which took place before the Sunday service.
Fig. 1 of 5 (Traveler, 2013)
This is an image that speaks volumes about what it was like to be segregated against. In the picture there are African Americans trying to collect the pieces of what was left of the church after the bombing. At the same time, it is evident that are also demonstrating resilience against the segregation against them (Traveler, 2013). What is most striking though is the title of the paper. The paper refers to the African American girls that were killed in the attack as Negros. This is a term that was largely used to segregate the African Americans by treating them as second class citizens, a habit that had been common during the times when slavery was rife (Traveler, 2013).
Fig 2 of 5 ("About the 1963 Birmingham Bombing", 2016)
In this image, some of the African Americans had taken to the streets to protest the killing of the four girls at the church. It is also evident that there are firemen with high pressure hoses trying to disperse the crowd that had gathered ("About the 1963 Birmingham Bombing", 2016). This is also an image that speaks to the context of the segregation at the time, towards the African Americans. While the African Americans used peaceful demonstrations, the whites resulted to violent act such as the bombing of the church. The African American demonstrations were always met with force and violence ("About the 1963 Birmingham Bombing", 2016).
Fig 3 of 5 (Cohen, 2013)
This is an image that shows part of the crime scene days after the bombing took place at the church. There are some of the fire men and some African American overseeing the proceedings at the church site (Cohen, 2013). The picture shows a rough image of the destruction that was caused by the bomb...
